Each person will have different circumstances, therefore the organisations you need to contact will vary. The following cover most areas but is not necessarily a complete listing:


FINANCIAL

  • Banks & Building Societies - Close any current, loan, mortgage or savings accounts.

  • Credit card companies – Close any credit or store cards. Proof of death will be required.

  • Pensions Providers for any personal or company pensions held

  • Premium Bonds – Contact National Savings & Investments on 0845 964 5000 orNational Savings & Investiments

  • Life Insurance companies – Proof of death required


GOVERNMENT AGENCIES

  • State Pensions. You will need to return the completed Notification of Death form provided by the registrar. The address to which this should be sent to will vary depending on where you are located.

  • Inland Revenue - Contact your local tax office by calling the Helpline on 0845 9000 444

  • DVLA – Any driving licence held should be returned to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1BY with a copy of the death certificate

  • Passport Office – Passports should be returned to the nearest British Passport issuer. Contact information atThe Passport Service

  • Social Services - Cancel any services used such as meals on wheels, transport or help at home. In the first instance call your local council. Contact information can be found atLocal Council List

  • Council Tax – Contact your local council

  • Housing Benefit – Contact your local council

We recommend that you contact each of the relevant local council departments individually to ensure that all parties are informed.


HOUSEHOLD

  • Landlord if living in private rented accommodation

  • Utilities companies

    • Gas
    • Electricity
    • Water

    If you don't know who the supplier is:

    • For gas, call the Transco Meter helpline on 0870 608 1524
    • For electricity, call Energywatch on 08459 06 07 08

  • Telecommunications companies
    • Landlines
    • Mobile phones
    • TV or Internet providers

  • Television Licence - Call TV Licensing on 0870 241 6468 or visitTV Licensing

  • Cancel household insurance


HEALTH

  • Notify and cancel any appointments at
    • Doctor
    • Dentist
    • Chiropodist
    • Optician
    • Hairdresser
  • Returns any drugs to your local pharmacist

  • Cancel any medical insurance


GENERAL

  • Cancel car insurance – particularly important if named drivers are also on the policy as cover could be invalid

  • Return any library books and cancel any library cards

  • Cancel other club memberships or subscriptions

  • Cancel milk or newspaper deliveries

  • Return any bus, rail or other travel passes

  • Register with theDeceased Preference Service online or by calling 0800 068 4433

  • We recommend that you send any documents by Recorded or Special Delivery and keep a note of the dates on which the respective organisations were notified
